This is a plain, salted dark chocolate bar. But there is a combination of strawberry notes from the cacao and with the sea salt it makes for a particularly unusual tasting experience, and it was not something I expected. The strawberry character comes entirely from the cacao itself, which makes the flavour all the more interesting.
I enjoyed the bar, although it would not be my first choice. For me, the balance is simply a little too heavily weighted towards the salt, leaving less room for the more delicate cacao/strawberry character to develop. I think it works better as a small indulgence — a bite or two at a time — rather than a chocolate I would want to eat in larger quantities.
If you buy this bar you should, expect a distinctly salty chocolate, but this might be something you enjoy. In fact, the salt is so pronounced that it dominates much of the flavour profile, which is a shame as the cacao itself has a wonderful nuance. Whether this level of salt is consistent across the entire batch or simply a characteristic of the bar I tasted, I’m not sure, but it is certainly the defining feature of the chocolate.
I also like the packaging, although I would enjoy seeing a little more variation across the range. When the primary distinction between the bars is the colour of the packaging, the overall presentation can begin to feel somewhat repetitive.
